track bike development - help rqd

Postby photomike666 on Fri Feb 05, 2010 11:40

I'm planning the next stage of development in my CBRs development and need some advice.

Two areas need work - the tail end and the bar height.

The tail unit is probably the easiesr, but would like input from someone who has done it - I want to put the seat/tail end of an F4i onto the older F4 (Banana seat to single seat). Do I need to change the sub frame or can I mod the present one - and where does the seat bolt to?

Second is more complex. The stock bars are above the tripple clamp and are just too high. I want to lower them below the trippleclamp, but this may make the set up less stable and will definately foul the fairings. Can this converstion be done, and what does it involve?

All help and input greatly appreciated.

moving the clip ons below the top tripple wont make the bike less stable, it will just load up the front more while cornering.

it will be fine. as long as you modify the fairings.

Im only going on memory for the F4 but swapping the tail unit shouldnt be a big deal. Stick with the original subframe and just mod up the tail a bit. If its too wide a simple bracket should hold it all together. The glass part doesnt take any weight its only where the set goes that it needs to mount up solidly. You'd be surpised at what can be done :)

Haven't really done much on the tail yet, ideas are still in the pipeline.

FGront end has started. I just fitted new clip ons under the tripple clamp and a 1/6th turn HRC throttle, housing and cables. The new throttle housing meant I lost all the stock switch gear, so I got a dirt bike starter switch/kill switch. I also ditched the left hand switch gear, which also lost the choke lever. I have purchased and remote choke lever, but am yet to fit it.

I still have to modift the fairings, but not by too much. I also need to move the dash or replace it with a small tach. Might have some fun with the wiring here (see other thread).

Will update with pics once I geta bit more done.

Hey Mike, what you should do is take the rear stuff off, and then take a photo of the rear subframe... Ill take the one off the suzuki and see if it is similar at all.... If it is close at all you will know if you can just buy a suzuki rear and modify it... Its just fibreglass at the end of the day.

RE: Clip-ons...

Here is my YZF600. The new Clip-ons are made by Tingate in Vic. You can see the originals mounted above the top tripple clamp. I added a spacer plate next to the standard steering stop, so now I only have about 15 degrees of lock each way - so the bars don't foul the fairings.
Made a huge difference having the weight lower. Although, going from steel Yamaha bars, with steel bar end weights to the alloy bars with plastic bar end weights did make it want to headshake a little easier. It really needs a steering damper, but I will have to make my own bracket mounting and I couldn't be bothered...
